It is named due to its location, which is halfway between Hagerstown and Williamsport. Halfway is a major suburb in the Hagerstown-Martinsburg, MD-WV, Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population grew from 10,701 to 11,896 (+11%). Half of its homes were built before 1970.
