The story

from WikipediaRead it all ↗

Valley Township was formed in 1855, following the petition of residents requesting that Pine Township be split in two pieces. It was originally proposed that it be named Buffington Township after a local judge, but he declined, and suggested naming it for any living person be avoided. It was named instead for the valley of the Cowanshannock Creek.

A post office called Oscar was established on July 25, 1861, with Francis Martin as its postmaster. It remained in operation until 1886.

Nothing in Valley is on the National Register yet

That’s true of most small towns. It doesn’t mean Valley has no history, only that no one has written up a nomination. The closest listed place is Armstrong County Courthouse and Jail in Kittanning, 5.4 miles away.

How a place gets listed

1Talk to the stateEvery nomination goes through the State Historic Preservation Office. Owners, towns and historical societies can start one.
2Try a local or state list firstMany states keep their own register with a shorter form, a common first step for old barns, halls and schoolhouses.
3Write it upA nomination covers the history, photos and a map. Armstrong County Courthouse and Jail’s page links to a real one.
