It is part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of the CDP was 21,891 at the 2020 census. Hayesville is the home of Chemeketa Community College's main campus.
Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population grew from 19,936 to 21,891 (+10%). Half of its homes were built before 1980.
