The story so far

from Wikipedia & the U.S. Census

St. Regis or Saint Regis is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Mineral County, Montana. The population was 313 at the time of the 2020 census. Pierre-Jean De Smet travelled extensively in this area of Montana. He named the river, after which the town takes its name, after a fellow Jesuit priest. The post office opened in 1896. The Northern Pacific Railway built a railroad through the town in the early 1900's, boosting the economy.

Its population held steady between the last two censuses: 319 people in 2010, 313 in 2020. Half of its homes were built before 1968.

Nothing in St. Regis is on the National Register yet

That’s true of most small towns. It doesn’t mean St. Regis has no history, only that no one has written up a nomination. The closest listed place is St. Regis Airway Beacon in St. Regis, 2.8 miles away.

How a place gets listed

1Talk to the stateEvery nomination goes through the State Historic Preservation Office. Owners, towns and historical societies can start one.
2Try a local or state list firstMany states keep their own register with a shorter form, a common first step for old barns, halls and schoolhouses.
3Write it upA nomination covers the history, photos and a map. St. Regis Airway Beacon’s page links to a real one.
