The unincorporated communities of Mill Creek Community and Rocky Run are located in the town. The town was most likely named for Samuel Carson, who immigrated from Ireland around 1872.
Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population grew from 1,305 to 1,374 (+5%). Half of its homes were built before 1987.
