The town was founded in 1904, and was named for Thomas Ainsworth, a civil engineer who supervised the construction of the Wolf River Dam in 1869 for the Keshena Improvement Company. The population was 477 at the 2020 census, up from 469 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated community of Pearson is located within the town. The township is served by the Pickerel Volunteer Fire Department, and the Pickerel Rescue Squad for ambulance services.
Its population held steady between the last two censuses: 469 people in 2010, 477 in 2020. Half of its homes were built before 1984.
