As of the 2020 census, Lovingston had a population of 503. Its ZIP code is 22949. It was among the communities severely affected by flash flooding from Hurricane Camille in 1969. Lovingston is part of the Charlottesville metropolitan area. Lovingston High School, Lovingston Historic District, and the Nelson County Courthouse are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
