The town received its name from Lorenzo Snow, an apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He named it Portage after his birthplace of Portage County, Ohio.
Portage was established in 1867. Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population grew from 245 to 273 (+11%). Half of its homes were built before 1975.
