The story

from WikipediaRead it all ↗

The first settlement took place in 1868, when two settlers from Kansas built a two-story cabin. Other settlers followed. The community had several different names before a post office named Wanette opened on March 19, 1894. In 1903, the town moved one mile north to be on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway line between Newkirk and Pauls Valley

Nothing in Wanette is on the National Register yet

That’s true of most small towns. It doesn’t mean Wanette has no history, only that no one has written up a nomination. The closest listed place is Old Santa Fe Railroad Bridge in Byars, 4 miles away.

How a place gets listed

1Talk to the stateEvery nomination goes through the State Historic Preservation Office. Owners, towns and historical societies can start one.
2Try a local or state list firstMany states keep their own register with a shorter form, a common first step for old barns, halls and schoolhouses.
3Write it upA nomination covers the history, photos and a map. Old Santa Fe Railroad Bridge’s page links to a real one.
