The story

from WikipediaRead it all ↗

Cloverdale was originally called Evansville, and under the latter name was platted in 1877 when the railroad was extended to that point. The present name most likely is derived from the Clover Leaf Railroad, which passed through a nearby junction. The village was incorporated as Cloverdale in 1902.

During the tornado outbreak of November 17th, 2013, an EF-2 tornado struck the southern end of Cloverdale before dissipating, where minor to moderate structural damage occurred, and many trees and power lines were downed. A church in town sustained extensive damage to its walls and roof, and a nearby home sustained collapse of a wall.

Nothing in Cloverdale is on the National Register yet

That’s true of most small towns. It doesn’t mean Cloverdale has no history, only that no one has written up a nomination. The closest listed place is Spring Grove Cemetery in Jackson, 9 miles away.

How a place gets listed

1Talk to the stateEvery nomination goes through the State Historic Preservation Office. Owners, towns and historical societies can start one.
2Try a local or state list firstMany states keep their own register with a shorter form, a common first step for old barns, halls and schoolhouses.
3Write it upA nomination covers the history, photos and a map. Spring Grove Cemetery’s page links to a real one.
