Athalia is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). According to tradition, Athalia was named after the daughter of a first settler.
Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population fell from 373 to 279 (-25%). Half of its homes were built before 1977.
