Stanton was platted in 1870. Both the city and county are named after Edwin Stanton, secretary of war for president Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War.
Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population fell from 1,577 to 1,520 (-4%). Half of its homes were built before 1956.
