The story

from WikipediaRead it all ↗

Denton was established in 1871 when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad was extended to that point. It was named for Daniel M. Denton, the original owner of the town site. Denton was incorporated in 1913. In 1930, a fire burned down many buildings in the village, creating an even worse environment for the already-struggling businesses following the stock market crash a year prior.

Nothing in Denton is on the National Register yet

That’s true of most small towns. It doesn’t mean Denton has no history, only that no one has written up a nomination. The closest listed place is Nebraska City to Fort Kearny Cutoff Ruts at Spring Creek Prairie in Denton, 3.4 miles away.

How a place gets listed

1Talk to the stateEvery nomination goes through the State Historic Preservation Office. Owners, towns and historical societies can start one.
2Try a local or state list firstMany states keep their own register with a shorter form, a common first step for old barns, halls and schoolhouses.
3Write it upA nomination covers the history, photos and a map. Nebraska City to Fort Kearny Cutoff Ruts at Spring Creek Prairie’s page links to a real one.
