De Kalb is named after General Johann de Kalb, a Franconian-French military officer who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population fell from 1,164 to 877 (-25%). Half of its homes were built before 1978.
