The story so far

from Wikipedia & the U.S. Census

Philadelphia is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in western Marion County, Missouri, United States. It is located 12 miles (19 km) west of Palmyra on Missouri Route 168. The community is part of the Hannibal Micropolitan Statistical Area. Philadelphia was platted in 1835. The community was named after Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A post office called Philadelphia has been in operation since 1847. Philadelphia was first listed as a census-designated place for the 2020 census, at which time it had a population of 206.

Half of its homes were built before 1987.

Wikipedia doesn’t have a history of Philadelphia yet — the old photos, dates and memories neighbors add here are how it gets written.

Nothing in Philadelphia is on the National Register yet

That’s true of most small towns. It doesn’t mean Philadelphia has no history, only that no one has written up a nomination. The closest listed place is Speigle House in Palmyra, 11.8 miles away.

How a place gets listed

1Talk to the stateEvery nomination goes through the State Historic Preservation Office. Owners, towns and historical societies can start one.
2Try a local or state list firstMany states keep their own register with a shorter form, a common first step for old barns, halls and schoolhouses.
3Write it upA nomination covers the history, photos and a map. Speigle House’s page links to a real one.
