The story

from WikipediaRead it all ↗

Variant names were "Stone House" and "Barnetsville". A post office called Stone House was established in 1858, and the name was changed to Barnetsville in 1875. For a brief period of time, the name was Marysville, after a citizen named Mary Justice. The name changed to Barnett in 1880, when the town was rebuilt following a tornado. The present name is after one Mr. Barnet, an early settler.

The Jesse Ratcliff House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Nothing in Barnett is on the National Register yet

That’s true of most small towns. It doesn’t mean Barnett has no history, only that no one has written up a nomination. The closest listed place is Jesse Ratcliff House in Barnett, 2.6 miles away.

How a place gets listed

1Talk to the stateEvery nomination goes through the State Historic Preservation Office. Owners, towns and historical societies can start one.
2Try a local or state list firstMany states keep their own register with a shorter form, a common first step for old barns, halls and schoolhouses.
3Write it upA nomination covers the history, photos and a map. Jesse Ratcliff House’s page links to a real one.
