Athens Township was named after the original name of what now is Albany, Missouri. A settlement in southwest Athens Township called Albany Junction was located at the junction between two railroads.
Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population fell from 2,178 to 2,084 (-4%). Half of its homes were built before 1972.
