As of the 2000 census, the township population was 352, and by 2020 its population declined to 269. The township is named for the masses of hematite iron ore in the rocks prevalent in the area.
Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population fell from 338 to 269 (-20%). Half of its homes were built before 1978.
