The story so far

from Wikipedia & the U.S. Census

Eminence Township is located in Logan County, Illinois. As of the 2020 census, its population was 381 and it contained 186 housing units. Thomas C. Wilson surveyed the land that became the village of Eminence in September 1836. Named because of its location on high ground, Eminence received a U.S. Post Office in June 1838 and was part of Tazewell County, Illinois until the Illinois General Assembly created Logan County in February 1839. The village of Eminence was disestablished after the Civil War and is currently known as Mount Joy.

Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population fell from 421 to 381 (-10%). Half of its homes were built before 1948.

Wikipedia doesn’t have a history of Eminence yet — the old photos, dates and memories neighbors add here are how it gets written.

Nothing in Eminence is on the National Register yet

That’s true of most small towns. It doesn’t mean Eminence has no history, only that no one has written up a nomination. The closest listed place is Hawes, J. H., Elevator in Atlanta, 4.5 miles away.

How a place gets listed

1Talk to the stateEvery nomination goes through the State Historic Preservation Office. Owners, towns and historical societies can start one.
2Try a local or state list firstMany states keep their own register with a shorter form, a common first step for old barns, halls and schoolhouses.
3Write it upA nomination covers the history, photos and a map. Hawes, J. H., Elevator’s page links to a real one.
