It is the westernmost point in Iowa, this being due to a bend in the Big Sioux River. The nearby Broken Kettle wildlife refuge is one of the few places in Iowa where prairie rattlesnakes are commonly found.
Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population fell from 132 to 123 (-7%). Half of its homes were built before 1944.
