The story so far

from Wikipedia & the U.S. Census

Pioneer is a census-designated place in Amador County, California, United States. It is located 5 miles (8 km) east-northeast of Pine Grove, at an elevation of 2,986 ft (910 m) along State Route 88. The community is served by ZIP code 95666 and area code 209. The population was 1,066 at the 2020 census. Pioneer Station, built circa 1925, is located in Pioneer; however, it was never a Pony Express stop, a popular fallacy. It was a general store selling gas, water, and offering camping sites. A post office opened in Pioneer in 1947.

Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population fell from 1,094 to 1,066 (-3%). Half of its homes were built before 1986.

Wikipedia doesn’t have a history of Pioneer yet — the old photos, dates and memories neighbors add here are how it gets written.

Nothing in Pioneer is on the National Register yet

That’s true of most small towns. It doesn’t mean Pioneer has no history, only that no one has written up a nomination. The closest listed place is St. George Hotel in Volcano, 2.5 miles away.

How a place gets listed

1Talk to the stateEvery nomination goes through the State Historic Preservation Office. Owners, towns and historical societies can start one.
2Try a local or state list firstMany states keep their own register with a shorter form, a common first step for old barns, halls and schoolhouses.
3Write it upA nomination covers the history, photos and a map. St. George Hotel’s page links to a real one.
