The story so far

from Wikipedia & the U.S. Census

Staves is a census-designated place in Cleveland County, Arkansas, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 133. Staves was known locally as the "Y" Community, because State Route 212 created a "Y" where it intersected State Route 35, with connectors leading both north and south from State Route 212's east–west direction. The road has since been modified and a third stretch of road has been added to connect State Route 212 at a 90-degree angle to State Route 35.

Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population grew from 116 to 133 (+15%). Half of its homes were built before 2004.

Wikipedia doesn’t have a history of Staves yet — the old photos, dates and memories neighbors add here are how it gets written.

Nothing in Staves is on the National Register yet

That’s true of most small towns. It doesn’t mean Staves has no history, only that no one has written up a nomination. The closest listed place is Rison Overpass in Rison, 7.2 miles away.

How a place gets listed

1Talk to the stateEvery nomination goes through the State Historic Preservation Office. Owners, towns and historical societies can start one.
2Try a local or state list firstMany states keep their own register with a shorter form, a common first step for old barns, halls and schoolhouses.
3Write it upA nomination covers the history, photos and a map. Rison Overpass’s page links to a real one.
