It is included in the Jonesboro, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is named for the Greek seaport of Lepanto, the site of a great sea battle in 1571.
Between the 2010 and 2020 censuses its population fell from 1,893 to 1,732 (-9%). Half of its homes were built before 1974.
