The city is located in the Piedmont Triad, where it is the principal city of the Burlington, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, located directly east of the Greensboro-High Point Metropolitan Area. The population of the city of Burlington was 57,303 at the 2020 census, which makes Burlington the 18th-most populous city in North Carolina.
